Curious Hackathon #2

Theme

This second Hackathon, each dev team of two or three teamed up with a business person to create a unique idea and develop a prototype in one day. There was no restrictions on ideas or platform however at the 4:30 cutoff, each team must present a 5minute business presentation and a 5minute demo.

DevScout is an application designed to fit developers with their companies, avoiding the usually annoying recruiting process. Devscout is designed as a mobile platform to be accessed by developers and interfaces with both Github and Twitter for developers and companies respectively. Companies are shown a list of developers ranging in skills close to what they searched for and developers have a chance to showcase their codebases directly at companies.


The application is developed using ruby on rails and uses the jQuery mobile UI for a pretty mobile interface.

Team Blue - PicsCount

Pics count is a android based picture game. Contestants take photos of billboards of popular companies such as McDonalds, Coca-Cola, etc. Contestants can receive points and prizes based on wether these images fit the tags of these advertisers. This information can in then turn be sold back to the advisers.


PicsCount uses Android and Ruby on Rails.

Team Green - ChickenScRatch

ChickeScRatch is an e-prescribing tool for doctors. Unlike most e-prescribing tools where both the doctor and the pharmacy have to be using the same e-prescribing tools, ChickenScRatch is able to allow the doctor to prescribe to any pharmacy that allows prescribing via Fax Machine, allowing the doctor to prescribe from anywhere. ChickenScratch is also optimized for mobile devices, allowing the doctor to prescribe right from his mobile phone.


ChickenScRatch is written in Node.js and CoffeeScript and interfaces with DocRapter

Curious Hackathon #1 Results

Something we do internally at Curious Minds is our Monthly Hackathon Projects. For the purpose of this blog post we will doing be outlining the first hackathon results however during the next few weeks, the projects and example demonstration videos of hackathons #2 and #3 will be blogged about on here.

Theme

The Theme for Hackathon #1 was to create a product based on the Twilio API. Contestants were given 6hours and 30minutes to complete this task and present.

Results

StatusBoard/Nodify - Winner!

StatusBoard is a Node.js application that interfaces with the Twilio API. This application is designed for TV screens and anyone can text in or call in to the status board and have their message appear on the board.

As the winner of the hackathon, each Team Member received and AppleTV

PhoneBox

PhoneBox is a Ruby on Rails application that interfaces with the Twilio API designed for people to call in and record and or dictate any notes to the PhoneBox Number. This message is then emailed as an attachment to your email so you can listen to your notes at any time.

RoboKim

RoboKim is a Ruby on Rails application that interfaces with the Twilio API and the Neospeech API designed to convert any message into a spoken phone call. Enter your destination phone number and the message, and this number will receive a phone call speaking your message.
